Electric Propulsion for Space

Electric propulsion (EP) is the acceleration of gases for the purpose of producing propulsive thrust by electric heating, electric body forces, and/or electric and magnetic body forces. An external power source is required to provide the DC or RF electric field and/or the magnetic field used in typical EP thrusters. EP thrusters range in size from very small (micropropulsion for precision positioning) to very large (megawatts for interplanetary and deep space travel). The SETS lab is involved in the investigation of several EP concepts from very large to very small.
